Exploring the world of science

The Sci-Spy Rainbow Choose a Topic

The Sci-Spy Rainbow

Have you figured out why different topics in Sci-Spy are different colours? This isn’t an easy question so don’t worry if you cannot answer it!

The answer lies in the science curriculum that teachers follow when teaching their pupils. You can think of a curriculum as a kind of menu that outlines all the things you need to know in that subject.

In Ireland, the primary science curriculum has four strands. These are:

  • Living Things
  • Energy and Forces
  • Materials
  • Environmental Awareness and Care

In Sci-Spy, we’ve used four colours of a rainbow to represent the four different strands of the curriculum. So, when you go to the topic METALS it appears on a purple page. Purple is the colour we’ve used for all topics in the MATERIALS strand of the curriculum. Similarly, when you go to MAGNETISM it appears on a blue page. Blue is the colour we’ve used for all topics in the ENERGY & FORCES strand.

Now, you try! What colour in the Sci-Spy rainbow represents the LIVING THINGS strand?

P.S. Sci-Spy includes over 30 topics, not all of which are directly referenced in the Irish curriculum. The extra ones are in a category called OTHER TOPICS.
